Clarens - a breath of fresh mountain air

Breathe in....breathe out. In.....and out. Finally. We got the break we so desperately needed. It was short but blissful. One whole day and two nights long. Where in the world can a person go for a break so short to revive the senses and soothe the tired mind? You don't believe? Well, it is quite possible.

If you already live by the sea, you go to the mountains. Four hours drive away to a little village by the name of Clarens, in the Eastern Free State, not the one in Switzerland.  It is a quaint little mountain village with one tarred road and a village square. No highrise buildings, no chain stores or fast food outlets, just the few shops, cosy restaurants, art galleries and many, many B & B's, Guest Houses and a few Hotels.

The loudest noise you  hear from time to time are the many Harley Davidsons who frequent Clarens on a regular basis. The most beautiful sound though, is the silence. A beautiful song along with the many bird species who call it home, the lowing of cattle far off and a faithful dog barking in the distance. You can hear the Church bell tolling off the hours in a day, so soothing, as it feels like time is standing still after you have arrived and unpacked your car.

We have been going to Clarens for seven years now and altogether twenty seven years have we been travelling the road to nearby Golden Gate Highlands National Park, before Clarens was developed as an attractive family destination. We've stayed in many places through the years and this time, for our wedding anniversary, we stayed at The Crooked Cottage. Strange name for such an enchanting little house!

The Crooked Cottage is by far the most heartwarming acommodation we've ever stayed in while in Clarens. Tranquil, peaceful and most beautiful (if you enjoy the simple things in life.) The owner, Sue Putziger, has that special touch to really make her guests feel welcome. Upon opening the front door we were welcomed by a lovely decanter of sherry with two little crystal glasses right at the entrance, a pleasant interlude to the crisp autumn evening.

Another pleasant surprise awaited me in the bedroom. Beautiful roses from the garden in a vintage vase. Made me feel spoilt and right at home.

The kingsize bed was just what our tired bodies needed complete with an electric blanket, very necessary for the chilly autumn evenings.

A very cosy little dining nook in the corner of the lounge.

My heart always yearns for this beautiful little town. In the meantime I am counting blessings as I go about my daily work. There is always next time to look forward to!
